The flag of the Haudenosaunee—the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Six Nations—features a purple field with a white band bearing the Hiawatha Belt symbol: a central tree flanked by four squares connected by a line. The design represents the original five nations (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca) united by the Great Law of Peace, with the central tree—the Tree of Peace—representing the Onondaga Nation, keepers of the council fire. The Tuscarora joined in 1722, forming the Six Nations. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy is one of the oldest participatory democracies in the world, predating European contact, and its governance structure is believed to have influenced the framers of the U.S. Constitution. The flag represents not just a nation but a political philosophy—peace through unity, law through consensus.
