History
Ukranian Standard
The Ukrainian Trident with Sword and Shield symbol is a modern reinterpretation of the Tryzub, the ancient coat of arms of Ukraine, blending historical state symbolism with contemporary national defense imagery. The original trident dates back over a thousand years to the rule of Prince Volodymyr the Great, who used it as a dynastic emblem of the Kyivan Rus. In this updated version, the central trident is flanked or overlaid with a sword and shield—symbols of protection, courage, and the ongoing struggle for sovereignty. While not an official national emblem, this variation has been widely adopted by Ukraine’s armed forces, volunteers, and patriotic movements since the 2014 Russian invasion and especially during the 2022 full-scale war. It transforms the ancient sign of statehood into a defiant modern badge of resistance, linking Ukraine’s deep past to its present fight for freedom.
