Massachusetts
The flag of Massachusetts carries a colonial grace and a complicated legacy. Adopted in 1908, it features the state coat of arms centered on a white field, showing a Native American holding a bow and arrow—pointed downward to symbolize peace—against a blue shield. Above him is a golden star, marking Massachusetts as one of the original thirteen states. Topping the shield is an arm wielding a sword, representing the state’s readiness to defend liberty, paired with the Latin motto Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem, meaning “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.” The design combines idealism and realism—an Enlightenment vision of justice forged in the turmoil of revolution. It’s a flag that embodies both the promise and paradox of America’s founding.
