The flag of Afghanistan has been changed more times than almost any other nation's—over twenty variations since the early twentieth century, each reflecting the turbulent shifts in power that have defined the country. The most internationally recognized modern design features three vertical stripes of black, red, and green with the national emblem at center, adopted by the Islamic Republic in 2004. Black represents the dark past, red the blood shed for independence, and green the hope and prosperity of the future. The central emblem includes a mosque with a mihrab, sheaves of wheat, and the shahada. Following the Taliban's return to power in 2021, the white flag bearing the shahada in black script was reinstated. Afghanistan's flag history is a chronicle of revolution, invasion, and resilience—a nation whose identity has been rewritten in fabric more than any other.
