The flag of Iraq features three horizontal stripes of red, white, and black—the Pan-Arab colors—with the Takbir, the Arabic phrase Allahu Akbar (God is Greatest), inscribed in green Kufic script across the central white stripe. The current design was adopted in 2008, replacing a version where the script was said to be in Saddam Hussein's own handwriting. The red stripe symbolizes courage, the white represents generosity, the black recalls the Abbasid Caliphate, and the green inscription reflects Islam. Iraq's flag has been modified repeatedly since the republic's founding in 1958, each version reflecting shifting political realities. The three stars that once represented a hoped-for union with Egypt and Syria were removed in 2008. It's a flag shaped and reshaped by revolution, war, and the ongoing search for national identity.
