History
California
The flag of California, known as the Bear Flag, was born out of rebellion and symbolism during a brief and chaotic chapter of the state’s history. It first appeared in 1846 during the Bear Flag Revolt, when a group of American settlers in Mexican-controlled California declared the region an independent republic. The flag they raised featured a lone star, a grizzly bear, and the words “California Republic.” The star was inspired by Texas’s lone star—an emblem of independence—while the bear represented both strength and the untamed wilderness of the West. Though the rebellion lasted only weeks before U.S. forces took control, the design endured as a proud emblem of California’s frontier spirit. The modern flag, adopted in 1911, preserves this mix of defiance and identity—a rugged homage to a short-lived republic that left a lasting mark.
