History

The flag of New York captures the state’s colonial roots, Revolutionary ideals, and enduring symbolism of liberty. Its deep blue field matches the U.S. flag’s blue, reflecting unity and vigilance, while the central coat of arms—first adopted in 1778—tells a visual story of prosperity and freedom. At its heart stands a shield showing the Hudson River with ships sailing beneath a golden sunrise, symbolizing commerce and hope.
