History
Kentucky
The flag of Kentucky is a dignified blend of simplicity and symbolism that reflects the state’s frontier origins and deep sense of unity. Adopted in 1918, it features the state seal centered on a dark blue field, mirroring the blue of the national flag. The seal depicts two figures—one dressed as a pioneer and the other as a statesman—shaking hands, representing the bond between all Kentuckians and the state’s motto, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” Around them are golden sprigs of goldenrod, Kentucky’s state flower, which were added later to lend a touch of local identity.
