History

Maryland

The flag of Maryland is one of the most striking and historically rooted in the United States, combining heraldry with colonial pride. Adopted officially in 1904, it features the alternating black-and-gold chevrons of the Calvert family and the red-and-white cross bottony of the Crossland family—symbols drawn from the coats of arms of George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, and his mother’s lineage. These two patterns represent the state’s dual heritage of nobility and faith, brought together when Maryland was founded as a colony in the 1600s. During the Civil War, the Crossland colors were favored by Confederate sympathizers, while the Calvert colors represented Union loyalty; their combination after the war symbolized reconciliation. The result is a flag of vivid contrast—medieval in design, yet uniquely American in spirit, celebrating unity through a shared and complex past.
