The flag of the United States—the Stars and Stripes—is one of the most recognized national symbols on Earth. The current fifty-star design was adopted on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii's admission as the fiftieth state, making it the twenty-seventh version of the flag. The thirteen red and white stripes represent the original colonies, while the fifty white stars on the blue canton represent the current states. The design has evolved from the original thirteen-star flag of 1777 through numerous iterations as the nation expanded westward. Red symbolizes valor, white purity and innocence, and blue vigilance and justice. The flag has been planted on the moon, draped over coffins, and carried into every conflict the nation has faced.
