The flag of Ukraine is a simple horizontal bicolor of blue over yellow, representing the sky above and the golden wheat fields below—an image that evokes the vast Ukrainian steppe and the agricultural richness that earned the country its reputation as the breadbasket of Europe. First used by Ukrainian nationalists in the nineteenth century, the colors were officially adopted in 1918 during the brief period of Ukrainian independence before Soviet absorption. The flag was banned under Soviet rule and restored in 1992 after independence. Since 2022, the blue and yellow have taken on renewed global significance as a symbol of Ukrainian resistance and sovereignty. Few flags in the world are as immediately evocative of their landscape, and few have come to mean as much to as many people in so short a time.
