The Jolly Roger—a white skull and crossbones on a black field—is the most universally recognized pirate flag in history, though no single pirate can claim its invention. The term likely derives from the French jolie rouge (pretty red), referring to the blood-red flags that early pirates flew to signal no quarter. By the early 1700s, the black flag with skull and bones had become standard among Atlantic and Caribbean pirates, with each captain adding personal variations. The skull and crossbones were drawn from existing maritime and cemetery symbolism, already associated with death and mortality. Its purpose was purely psychological: a ship flying the Jolly Roger offered surrender terms before battle, while a red flag meant no mercy at all. It's the original brand of fear—a marketing masterpiece that still sells three centuries later.
