The flag of Blackbeard—Edward Teach, the most feared pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy—is a menacing design meant to terrify ships into surrender without a fight. The traditional depiction shows a horned skeleton holding an hourglass in one hand and a spear piercing a bleeding heart in the other, all set against a black field. The hourglass warns that time is running out; the pierced heart promises violence to those who resist. Blackbeard terrorized the Atlantic coast and Caribbean from 1716 until his death in 1718 at the hands of the Royal Navy off North Carolina. His flag was psychological warfare in fabric form—a declaration that mercy was available only to those who yielded immediately. Bold, brutal, and theatrical, it remains one of the most recognizable pirate emblems ever flown.
