The flag of Canada, affectionately known as the Maple Leaf or l’Unifolié, is a modern symbol of unity, simplicity, and national identity. Officially adopted on February 15, 1965, it replaced the Red Ensign to give Canada a distinct emblem free from colonial ties. The design, created by George F. G. Stanley and John Matheson, features a bold red field with a white square at its center, containing a stylized red eleven-pointed maple leaf. The maple leaf had been a Canadian emblem since the 18th century, representing the vast forests and the endurance of the people who lived among them. The red and white colors are Canada’s official national colors, derived from Britain and France, the nation’s founding cultures. The flag’s strength lies in its clean geometry and its quiet power—an unmistakable emblem of independence, unity, and pride from coast to coast.
