History
Alberta
The flag of Alberta, adopted in 1968, reflects the province’s rich geography and pioneering heritage. It features the provincial shield centered on a deep blue field. The shield itself is divided into vivid layers: at the top, the red St. George’s Cross on a white background nods to England, acknowledging Alberta’s colonial origins. Below, the Rocky Mountains rise above green foothills, golden wheat fields, and grassy plains—an idealized landscape showing Alberta’s natural wealth and agricultural foundation. The blue field surrounding the shield represents clear prairie skies. Simple but evocative, Alberta’s flag captures the province’s identity as both rugged frontier and breadbasket of Canada, grounded in natural abundance and a proud sense of independence.
