History
North Carolina
The flag of North Carolina reflects the state’s Revolutionary origins and its enduring sense of independence. Adopted in its current form in 1885, it features a vertical blue stripe with a white star—the “Star of the North”—flanked by the letters N and C, and two red and white horizontal bars echoing the U.S. flag. Above and below the star are two dates: May 20, 1775, commemorating the legendary Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (an early, though disputed, call for freedom from Britain), and April 12, 1776, marking the Halifax Resolves, when North Carolina became the first colony to officially advocate independence. The design combines Southern boldness with revolutionary pride, serving as both a banner of loyalty to the Union and a reminder that North Carolinians were among the first to imagine it breaking free.
