United States of America

The flag of the United States—often called the Stars and Stripes—is both a national emblem and an evolving record of the country’s growth. First adopted on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress, the original design featured thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field, representing the unity of the thirteen colonies that declared independence from Britain. As new states joined the Union, stars were added, culminating in the current 50-star design established in 1960 after Hawaii’s admission. The red stands for valor and bravery, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Over time, the flag has come to symbolize not only the United States itself but the ideals of democracy and freedom that continue to define its identity—an ever-changing constellation of states united beneath enduring principles.
