The flag of Ireland is a vertical tricolor of green, white, and orange, first introduced in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher, a Young Irelander inspired by the French Revolution. The green represents the Gaelic and Catholic tradition of Ireland, the orange represents the Protestant and Unionist community—named for William of Orange—and the white between them symbolizes the hope for peace and unity between the two traditions. Officially adopted in 1919 by the Irish Republic during the War of Independence, the flag became the national flag of the Irish Free State and later the Republic of Ireland. Its message is aspirational rather than triumphant: not a declaration of one side's victory over another, but a wish for coexistence. In a land shaped by centuries of division, the white stripe remains the most important.
