The flag of Spain—known as la Rojigualda—is a bold and timeless symbol of unity, monarchy, and maritime power. Officially adopted in 1785 under King Charles III, it features three horizontal stripes: red, yellow, and red, with the central yellow band twice the height of the red ones. This vivid design was originally chosen for naval visibility at sea, standing out against the waves and sky. On the hoist side lies Spain’s intricate coat of arms, which unites the historical kingdoms that formed the nation—Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre, and Granada—beneath the royal crown. The Pillars of Hercules, flanking the shield, bear the motto Plus Ultra (“More Beyond”), reflecting Spain’s era of exploration and empire.
